Should the state repeal its 200-year-old law against adultery?
On Feb. 3, the House passed bill (HB 1402) which repeals the law. The bill, co-sponsored by Rep. Timothy Horrigan (D-Durham) and Rep. Carol McGuire (R-Epsom), now goes to the Senate.
Supporters of the bill do not believe the government should interfere with the private sexual conduct of consenting adults. The House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee is supporting repeal.
Opponents have argued that decriminalizing adultery would weaken marriage.
The most recent attempt to repeal the statute was in 1992. It failed.
