Should the legislature toughen the Pupil Safety and Violence Prevention Act?

In 2000, the Legislature passed the Pupil Safety and Violence Prevention Act.

The law requires each local school board to adopt a pupil safety and violence prevention policy which addresses bullying.

Some educators, parents and students believe the law isn't strict enough.

House Bill 1523 provides a clearer definition of bullying and its impact on children, while including cyber-bullying.

The bill also includes a provision which holds schools accountable for enforcing the law.

A group of parents and students testified on behalf of stricter bullying laws Jan. 19 during a public hearing before the Education Committee in Concord.

HB 1523 is slated for an Executive Session in the Legislative Office Building on Feb. 16.
