Should motorcyclists be required to wear helmets?

The House of Representatives dismissed a bill on Feb. 2 that would have required motorcycle riders to wear helmets.

The bill was deemed "too inexpedient to legislate," according to the House Transportation Committee.

Rep. Judith Day (D-Hampton) proposed House Bill 1162.

"People using public roads should have to be responsible riders," Rep. Day told Seacoastonline.com. Day added that head injuries cost everyone through increased hospital costs, rehabilitation and loss of employment.

Opponents believe adults should have the choice to wear a helmet and those who ride without one are only endangering themselves.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, twenty states and the District of Columbia have motorcycle helmet laws that require all riders to wear a helmet. Twenty-seven states have a motorcycle helmet law that only require some riders to wear a helmet. Three states (Illinois, Iowa, and New Hampshire) do not have a motorcycle helmet law.
